Catharine Esther Beecher argued over women's health and education. She surveyed women's health across the nation in the 1850s, and concluded that sick women out numbered the healthy three to one. Beecher claimed that the report "would send a groan of terror and horror over the land."(Woloch 124) Beecher promoted teaching as a career for women, saying that it utilized women's "natural" nurturing talent. (Langly 65) However this did not mean that Beecher was in favor for equal rights amoung the sexes. She would constantly argue with the Grimke sisters about women's participation in the abolitionist movement.(Stevenson 1) Beecher claimed instead that women should work in their own sphere.(Langly 64) On May 11th in 1870 at the American Woman Suffrage Association Convention, Beecher's first words said were, "I will first state to what I am not opposed. And first, I am not opposed to women speaking in public to any who are willing to hear, nor do I object to women's preaching, sanctioned as it is by a prophetic apostle-as one of the millennial results."(Frost 216)
